Cristina Sutro

Bio & Expertise: My full name is Cristina Johnson Sutro and I was born in Manhattan. I attended elementary school here (The Chapin School) until I was 12 when my family moved out to the ‘wilds of New Jersey.’ In 1988 I earned a BA from The New School for Social Research and I started a career at ABC News working in film and video production for 20/20 and Barbara Walters.

After several years, I decided to change my career path to early childhood eduction and have never looked back. I find working with young students to be a great privilege as I witness them learn and mature. I have worked in both private and public schools in the United States, England, the Caribbean and China. I have included my resume, Orton-Gillingham certificate and recommendations below if you are interested in more details regarding my degrees, credentials and experience.

About twenty years ago, my youngest child, who was in First Grade, was having difficulties with reading, writing and spelling. A neuro-psychological evaluation pointed to dyslexia as a most likely diagnosis. Subsequently, she began Orton-Gillingham one-toone, bi-weekly tutoring sessions. Although we were anxious for the tutoring to end, as it was expensive and time consuming, six years of Orton-Gillingham tutoring insured academic success every year and acceptance to some of the top Colleges and Universities in the country. Needless to say, it kept her level self-confidence high, so she felt comfortable in school taking risks to advance her learning in a healthy and fun way.

At the beginning of my career as a First Grade teacher I was frequently left thinking my methods for teaching literacy were not working for a handful of the students in my classroom. I now believe that the Orton-Gillingham method would have greatly benefitted several of the students in my classroom all those years ago.

I have watched my own child progress through the Orton-Gillingham program, taken the two week intensive class at The Orton-Gillingham Academy twice and practiced this method with individuals and small groups of students from Kindergarten to Seventh Grade for the last ten years. I am convinced that The Orton-Gillingham method is the most efficient and successful way to teach reading, writing and spelling to students with dyslexia, different learnings styles as well as mainstream learners.

Fun Fact:  I speak Italian and am a potter.
