Erin McCarthy Shaw

Bio & Expertise: Erin McCarthy Shaw, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC specializes in neuropsychiatric and psychoeducational assessments for adolescents and adults, with a particular focus on neurodiversity-affirming approaches to ADHD, anxiety, mood, executive functioning, autism, learning differences, giftedness, and 2e. Erin’s assessments provide a comprehensive, client-centered understanding of each individual’s strengths and differences, leading to personalized interventions and accommodations that support success across family, social, academic, and community settings.

Erin is licensed as an APRN in both Connecticut and New York. Erin completed Yale’s advanced practice psychiatric nursing program in 2013, including internships at Yale Behavioral Health Services of Hamden and Yale Child Study Center’s In-Home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services (IICAPS). Erin worked at Yale-New Haven Hospital’s psychiatric emergency services department, where she was part of the team that pioneered its psychiatric observation unit. She later gained experience in clinical research at the Clinical Neurosciences Division of the National Center for PTSD at the West Haven VA Medical Center. Erin also completed rigorous post-graduate training in psychological assessment, a program often pursued by PhD-level psychologists seeking advanced expertise in testing.

In summer 2024, Erin transitioned her practice to focus exclusively on providing comprehensive assessments. Her approach is non-prescriptive and integrates traditional psychiatric and psychological assessment methods, including testing for cognition, memory, executive functioning, academic achievement, social, emotional, and behavioral functioning, motor skills, and language and communication. As needed, Erin can order lab work to rule out potential medical comorbidities, conduct pharmacogenetic testing for clients with a history of poor response to psychiatric medications, and provide in-depth consultations for psychotropic medications. (Erin is not currently accepting clients for long-term medication management.) Erin's reports are client- and family-centered, designed to be both easy to read and understand while also meeting the necessary standards for educational and workplace accommodations.

Fun Fact:  I began playing the Highland bagpipes at the age of eight and competed throughout the USA, Canada, and Scotland during my youth. Before transitioning to the healthcare field, I earned a bachelor's degree in Scottish Music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
