Sheri Katz
Bio & Expertise: I am a Learning Specialist and Educational Therapist currently in private practice, supporting the growth of students with language based learning disabilities, and other learning challenges. My students range from pre-Kindergarten through high school. We work on developing all aspects of reading, writing, executive functioning, self-awareness of strengths and needs, as well as confidence and creativity. My experience includes 35 years as a reading specialist and department head in schools, including Fieldston Lower of the Ethical Culture Fieldston Schools. There I figured out how to integrate Orton-Gillingham structured phonics techniques, which Anna Gillingham had created in our school in the 1930’s, along with the motivating and playful use of all forms of literature, rich language, and deep curriculum content. My sessions are individualized, engaging and playful, while using research-based methods and programs (including phonemic awareness, PAF, Spire, Recipe for Reading, SRSD, The Writing Revolution and many more).
As an Educational Therapist, I focus on the whole child in close coordination with their support team of parents, teachers, and other professionals, to help each child build the skills and self-understanding needed to thrive.
I also love mentoring other teachers and learning specialists, both in individual and school settings, with a focus on how to assess and create goals and curriculum for work with both the student and parents.
Location: September to June- in person on Upper West/Upper East Side of NYC and virtual; July and August- in-person in East Hampton and virtual
Fun Fact: This year I finally made the trip to see the sphinxes and pyramids of Egypt, and I am excited to continue my own future travels, and to bring the studies of Ancient Civilizations alive with my students.
